Is your hair falling out more after the summer? What to do with your curly routine in September

¿Se te cae más el pelo después del verano? Qué hacer con tu rutina curly en septiembre

September arrives, routines resume... and so does a frequently asked question: "Is it normal for so much hair to fall out after the summer?"

You notice it when you wash your hair, apply conditioner, or detangle it. And if you have curly or wavy hair, the amount can seem even greater.

Before buying a shampoo, vitamins, or any "anti-hair loss" product, the most useful thing is to understand what is really happening. Because there can be seasonal hair loss, breakage after the summer, or simply several days of shed hairs accumulated in your curls.

Is it normal to lose more hair after summer?

It can happen. Hair goes through different phases of growth, rest, and renewal, and seasonal variations in this cycle have been observed.

Therefore, at the end of summer and beginning of autumn, many people start to notice more hair in the shower or on their brush.

This does not mean that all hair loss should be considered normal. The key is to observe if other changes also appear.

Why does it seem like curly hair sheds so much?

There's an important thing to consider in the Curly Method: we usually don't brush our hair dry every day.

Hairs that have already shed can get trapped in the curls until the next wash.

If you wash every four, five, or six days, it's normal for several days' worth of shed hair to appear together during detangling.

Visually, it can be much more impressive without necessarily meaning you're losing more hair than someone else.

First, distinguish: hair loss or breakage?

After weeks of sun, beach, pool, wind, and updos, we may also find more breakage.

  • If you see long strands, similar to the length of your hair, they are probably hairs that have shed.
  • If you find many shorter pieces of different lengths, there may be breakage.

And this difference matters because they are not cared for in the same way.

A mask or an oil can help dry or brittle lengths, but they don't solve hair loss that occurs from the root.

Before changing products, look at your scalp

When we see a lot of hair in the shower, it's easy to think we need to change our entire routine.

First, notice how your scalp is:

  • Is it clean and comfortable?
  • Do you notice more oil or buildup?
  • Has itching or flaking appeared?
  • Do you perceive an obvious loss of density?

These signs will help you much more than impulsively buying a product.

Low poo or clarifying after summer?

If your scalp is balanced, continue with your low poo

If your usual shampoo works, your scalp is clean, and you don't notice buildup, you don't need to change it just because September has arrived.

A suitable low poo can still be perfectly valid as a regular wash.

If you notice buildup, it might be time to clarify

During holidays, we can accumulate more styling products, protectors, oils, sweat, or pool residue.

If your hair feels heavy, dull, has less volume, or doesn't seem clean even after washing, a one-time clarifying cleanse can help you restore a good foundation.

But remember: clarifying is not treating hair loss. Its function is to clean buildup.

Afterward, you can return to your usual routine according to your scalp's needs.

And oils? To care for the lengths, not to stop hair loss

After summer, it's common for mid-lengths and ends to be drier, rougher, or more damaged. This is where oils can be beneficial.

Their function is to help care for the hair fiber, provide emollience, and reduce the sensation of dryness. We should not use them expecting them to stop seasonal hair loss.

Botanical Rescue Hair Serum

The Botanical Rescue Hair Serum can be a good fit when you want to care for mid-lengths and ends that have become drier or more damaged after summer.

NOURISH

Another option is NOURISH – Nourishing hair oil with marula, jojoba, argan and grapefruit essential oil, which you can incorporate in small quantities if your lengths need extra emollience.

Especially if you have fine or wavy hair, always start with a very small amount. More oil does not necessarily mean more care.

A simple routine for September

You don't need to do a ten-step reset. You can start with something much simpler:

  • Observe your scalp: Is it balanced or is there buildup?
  • Choose the right cleanse: low poo if everything is working well; clarifying if there is truly residue.
  • Detangle patiently: conditioner, good slip, and no pulling.
  • Check your lengths: if they are dry or brittle, adjust conditioner, mask, or oil.
  • Don't change everything at once: let your hair return to its routine and observe how it responds.

Common mistakes when we see more hair loss

Buying "anti-hair loss" products blindly

First, you need to understand why you're seeing more hair. A commercial claim does not replace that step.

Stopping washing out of fear

The hairs that appear during washing have often already shed. Delaying hygiene does not prevent hair loss and can promote greater accumulation on the scalp.

Clarifying too much

A deep cleanse can be useful when there is residue, but that doesn't mean you have to use a clarifying product every time you wash.

Taking supplements without knowing if you need them

We do not recommend automatically resorting to supplements when increased hair loss appears. If the situation is intense or persistent, it is appropriate to consult a professional.

When should you consult a professional?

Don't automatically attribute every change to autumn.

If you notice obvious loss of density, thinning areas, intense hair loss that persists over time, severe itching, persistent flaking, pain, or significant sensitivity, consult a professional.

In these cases, no randomly chosen shampoo, oil, or supplement replaces a proper assessment.

Curly Products Advice

September doesn't have to mean starting a completely new routine.

First look at your scalp, then your lengths, and only then decide what you need.

You might need to continue exactly as before. A one-time clarification might suit you well. Or your ends might appreciate a few drops of oil after summer.

The Curly Method is not about using more products. It's about understanding your hair and giving it what it truly needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for more hair to fall out in September?

There may be increased hair renewal at the end of summer and beginning of autumn. The important thing is to observe if there are striking changes in density or if the hair loss persists for a long time.

Why do I see so much hair when I apply conditioner?

Conditioner facilitates detangling, and at that moment, hairs that have already shed and were trapped in the curls can come out.

Do I need a clarifying shampoo if I'm experiencing hair loss?

Not because of the hair loss. Use a clarifying product when there is buildup and you need a deeper cleanse.

Do oils stop hair loss?

We shouldn't use them with that expectation. They can help care for mid-lengths and ends, especially if they are dry or damaged after summer.

Don't know what your hair needs after summer?

If you have doubts about whether to stick with your low poo, do a deeper cleanse, or adjust the care of your lengths, you can start with our Curly Product Recommender.
