Hormones, emotions, hair metamorphosis. Caring for curly hair during hormonal changes like menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, or even post-chemotherapy requires adapting your curly hair routine to maintain definition, hydration, and health.
Hormones and curls: the invisible link
The body changes, and with it, so does the hair. Our hair texture isn't static; it fluctuates with each hormonal phase. During the menstrual cycle, some people notice days of drier or frizzier hair. This is due to hormonal changes that affect the natural hydration of the scalp and hair fiber. During pregnancy, for example, the increase in estrogen prolongs the hair's growth phase, resulting in fuller, shinier hair with well-defined curls.
However, after childbirth, many people experience significant hair loss, loss of volume, and even changes in texture. The sudden drop in hormone levels can leave hair thinner, weaker, and less defined. The same thing happens with the onset of menopause: the drop in estrogen and progesterone levels is often accompanied by increased dryness, a more sensitive scalp, loss of elasticity in the hair fiber, and a decreased ability to form tight curls.
In other cases, after treatments such as chemotherapy, hair can reappear with a completely different texture. These new, soft curls are called "chemo curls," and although in many cases they are temporary, they require very specific care during their appearance and development. These hairs are finer, more delicate, and often unpredictable.
How to care for your curls after hormonal changes
Each phase requires a specific approach. Here are specific recommendations for each situation, with products you can find in our online store:
Menstruation:
- At this stage, many notice more frizz or less curl control.
- We recommend using Gyada Anti-Frizz Conditioner and apply NOURISH - Nourishing Hair Oil before the leave-in to provide elasticity and prevent frizz.
Postpartum:
- Hair can become more fragile, thinner, and less defined.
- Use Extreme Repair Mask Alma Secret for deep repair.
- Condition with My Protein Wonder Conditioner and finish with the Luc Color Extra Strong Hold Gel to provide structure and long-lasting hold.
Menopause:
- The curl loses strength and the scalp tends to dry out.
- Incorporates protein treatments such as Kerantea Peter Slim Total Protein .
- Condition with the Gyada Strengthening Conditioner with Spirulina to nourish without weighing down.
Post-chemotherapy:
- The hair may come out with a different texture, finer or with unexpected curls.
- We recommend following the "seaweed effect" routine: apply the conditioner to very wet hair until it achieves a gel-like texture.
- Use the Korean Evolution Conditioner and fixative with the Korean Performance Gel for soft, hair-friendly definition.
