You wash your hair, define your curls, start drying… and hours go by. The ends look dry, but the roots are still damp. Does this sound familiar?
Now that autumn is coming, air-drying your hair can be less comfortable. But your curls taking a long time to dry doesn't mean you're doing the Curly Method wrong or that you necessarily have low porosity. Sometimes it is a characteristic of your hair; other times, there are small details in your routine that you can improve.
Why does my curly hair take so long to dry?
There is no "normal" drying time for everyone. Before changing products, check these factors:
1. You have a lot of hair or thick fibers
In dense hair, air circulates with more difficulty between the strands. That is why the outer layers may be dry while the inner ones and the roots remain damp. It usually helps to dry in sections and pay attention to the roots.
2. You are using more product than you need
Leave-in, cream, mousse, gel… They all have their purpose, but you don't need to use them all in every wash. If you notice your hair feels heavy or coated, try reducing the amount of one of them. More product does not mean better definition.
3. You start drying with too much water
Defining with very wet hair can help form curls, but it doesn't need to be dripping wet either. Before applying your styling products, gently remove excess water with your hands, pressing the strands from bottom to top, without rubbing or undoing their shape. This way, you will avoid starting your routine with more water than necessary and facilitate the subsequent drying process.
4. What about porosity?
It also influences how your hair behaves with water, but you cannot determine your porosity based solely on how long it takes to dry. Thickness, density, products, and the environment also count. If you want to better guide your routine, consult our porosity packs.
How to dry your curls faster without losing definition
- Remove water before starting: gently press the strands with your hands, from bottom to top, to eliminate excess water without undoing the curls.
- Simplify your styling: try a smaller amount before buying another product.
- Dry the slowest-drying areas first: separate your hair and direct air toward the roots without concentrating too much heat.
- Use the diffuser wisely: start with a moderate or low temperature and gentle speed; avoid moving the curls constantly.
- Wait until your hair is dry to break the cast: that rigid layer left by some gels doesn't necessarily mean your hair is still wet.
If you have wavy, fine hair, it is usually worth trying lighter products and fewer layers of definition. If it is thick and full, you might need to keep the conditioning and focus on working better by drying in sections. You can find more guidance in our wavy hair section.
Which diffuser to choose? Bellissima Diffon or ghd Speed
Technique is fundamental, but the right tool can also make drying much more comfortable. At Productos Curly, we have two options for different needs and budgets.
Bellissima Diffon Supreme ION CARE XL: the curly classic
The Bellissima Diffon Supreme ION CARE XL is one of the best-known diffusers in the curly world. It combines a hair dryer and a diffuser in one tool, with an XL bowl designed to collect curls comfortably.
For whom? For those looking for a specific tool for waves and curls that is practical and simple to incorporate into their routine, without taking the leap to a premium range.
ghd Speed with diffuser: the premium alternative
If you prefer a professional tool with more adjustment possibilities, the professional ionic ghd Speed hair dryer in black with diffuser for curly hair is our premium proposal.
For whom? For those who use a hair dryer frequently, value versatility, and want to invest in a higher-end tool. The diffuser is included with this option from our store.
Which one to choose? Bellissima if you are looking for simplicity and a very well-known curly tool; ghd Speed if you prioritize a professional and premium drying experience. Neither replaces good technique or guarantees a specific drying time on its own.
Rocío's tip: change only one thing at a time
If it takes hours to dry, don't change your shampoo, cream, gel, and hair dryer all at once. Over several washes, try removing water better or using a smaller amount of one product first, keeping everything else the same.
Observe how long it takes to dry, how the roots look, whether you maintain volume, and how long the definition lasts. The best routine is not the one with the most steps, but the one that works for your hair and your day-to-day life.
Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for curly hair to take four or five hours to dry?
It can happen with dense or thick hair when air-drying. The time, by itself, does not indicate a problem.
If it takes a long time to dry, does it mean I have low porosity?
Not necessarily. Drying time alone does not allow you to identify porosity.
Does styling cream delay drying?
It depends on the formula, the amount, and the combination with other products. If you notice your hair feels heavy, try reducing the dose and observe the result.
Which diffuser is better for curls, Bellissima or ghd Speed?
It depends on your budget and what you are looking for: Bellissima Diffon is a specific and simple option for curly hair; ghd Speed is a professional and premium alternative with a diffuser.
A routine that fits you
Getting beautiful curls shouldn't force you to spend all morning waiting for them to dry. Sometimes it is enough to remove water better, adjust quantities, or improve your technique. And if you decide to invest in a hair dryer, do it because it meets your needs.
